Experience shows winds dirt bike around orange cones on training course
Border Patrol agent David Zahn’s experience shows as he winds his dirt bike around orange cones on a rocky training course. Two colleagues have a steeper learning curve, one of them stalling repeatedly and the other finding his groove after riding tentatively at first.
Zahn’s edge comes from experience; the Yuma Sector Border Patrol agent rides dirt bikes for fun. Yet he said he has a lot to learn to use the vehicle to do his job, which has him rescuing people in the rugged terrain along the Arizona-Mexico border near Yuma.
Those lessons include using hand signals to communicate with fellow riders and how to ride safely wearing the bulky backpack he carries as a member of BORSTAR, the Border Patrol’s search, trauma and rescue operation.

Palawan - With the increased interest by Asian bikers to participate in the upcoming 2009 Puerto Princesa Mountain Bike XC Challenge to be held on January 29-31, 2009 at the Magarwak Integrated Recreation & Nature Park of Puerto Princesa City, organizers are considering fielding “Expat” category, a new category in the race exclusively for foreign participants in the said competition.
Joey Mirasol, the event’s race director, explained that the competition was primarily conceived as a national individual competition, but would be open to any foreigner who may wish to join, considering that there are quite a few foreign permanent residents who have taken up the sport.
”Because word of the event reached bikers in Singapore, a bike-friendly city state holding regular mountain bike competitions at Kent Ridge, a public nature park with bike trails, their cycling association posted the 2009 Puerto Princesa Mountain Bike XC Challenge at their website”, he said.

2008 Foxy’s Fall Century Bike Ride sponsored by the Davis Bike Club
Paraplegic Matt Strugar-Fritsch, 25 years old from Carmichael, California will ride his hand cycle 106 miles within 24 hours through beautiful Solano and Napa counties in Northern California. This will be Matt’s first time attempting to go such a long distance in a short amount of time on his hand cycle since being injured in 2003. A very difficult feat for anyone but even more so for a paraplegic. However, he will not be alone on his journey. Matt’s Mother, Father and Sister will join him in this adventure and will be riding their bikes the same distance. Matt feels “incredibly grateful to have their support especially since this is their first time doing an event like this”. They are all “eager to push themselves to their limit and then even further”.
Matt is participating in the 2008 Foxy’s Fall Century Bike Ride sponsored by the Davis Bike Club. The number of participants is capped at 1,200. Strugar-Fritsch, like many athletes, has set his sight on many goals. He wants to win a marathon, compete in as many bicycle races as he can, and get back to the mountain bike trails he used to spend his summer days navigating. Strugar-Fritsch was well on his way to reach these goals as an able-bodied athlete, and though he lost the use of his legs in a mountain bike accident, the drive and determination burn brighter as he faces new challenges every day.
